Get healthy study

Are you someone with a mental health condition who wants to get healthy?

About the project

We are looking for volunteers who are currently receiving or recently received mental health care to take part a project. Researchers from the University of Newcastle would like to see if a telephone support service is useful for people who would like to improve their nutrition and become more physically active.

All participants will take part in an initial survey over the phone and will then be randomly allocated to one of two groups. Everyone will receive written information to help support a healthy lifestyle. In one group, people will also be provided with free telephone support to help you achieve your lifestyle goals. Everyone will be asked to take part in another survey over the phone around 6 months after your initial survey.

Why is this project important?

Previous research has shown that people with a mental health condition would like more help to make positive changes to their physical activity and nutrition. The data collected is intended to be used by mental health services to plan the care they deliver.

Who can participate in the project?

We are looking for people who:

  • Are currently receiving, or have received in the last 12 months, care from a mental health service
  • Have a working telephone number
  • Are 18 years or older
