Mental Health Support for Students

The University of Newcastle continues to prioritise student mental health and wellbeing through a wide range of accessible and free services. Students can book consultations with a Wellbeing Advisor, often available within one to two days, ensuring timely support. The University offers both face-to-face and online counselling appointments, as well as convenient online drop-in sessions via Skype for students seeking flexible access to care.

To further support students outside of regular hours, an after-hours phone support service is available, providing immediate assistance during evenings and weekends. A comprehensive suite of digital resources is also provided to help students proactively manage and improve their mental health, including Study and Wellbeing Resources.

In addition to student services, the University offers a confidential Employee Assistance Program (EAP), free for all staff and their immediate family members, reinforcing a whole-of-community approach to wellbeing.

Crisis care hotlines and integrated counselling services are available for students in urgent need, with pathways to additional support and care services as required. These initiatives showcase our strong commitment to fostering a safe, supportive, and mentally healthy campus environment.

Taking care of your mental health is a critical skill that will help you navigate your way through life – both as a student and beyond. For further information and immediate assistance, please see the Counselling webpage.

Our student support was available throughout 2024.
