The University of Newcastle’s main campus at Callaghan is only 12 kilometres from beaches and the heart of Newcastle.

Our campus is a wonderful mix of award winning, architecturally designed buildings and world-class infrastructure scattered over 140 hectares of natural bushland. We have a reputation for having one of the most naturally beautiful campuses in Australia.

We are focused on building strong regional communities and offer many of our state-of-the-art facilities to the public for hire. These facilities range from large auditoriums catering over 1,200 people for presentations, graduations, concerts and dance performances, to function rooms for events and smaller rooms for meetings. On our Callaghan campus we also have sporting facilities including an aquatic centre, multi-purpose courts and ovals.

The Callaghan Campus Venue Hire Guide provides helpful information for event organisers planning and organising to run events on our Callaghan campus by working together with our Venue Management Team.


Event organisers wanting to hold events on our Callaghan Campus need to consider holding the event on weekends, during semester break or in the evenings (subject to timetabling) after classes have concluded and to minimise disruption to students and classes. View key university dates.

Booking of teaching rooms within Callaghan Campus will only be approved after a review of timetable needs. Current timetabling has students commencing classes from 8:00am to 10:00pm weekdays.

Essential information

Public liability insurance

It is critical you have the right insurance for your event. You will need to provide the Venue Management Team with a certificate of currency (Public Liability Insurance) to the value of $20 million. The Public Liability Insurance is to be in the same name as the applicant/organisation.

Workers compensation insurance

A workers insurance policy provides an employer coverage in the event one of their employees suffer a work related injury or illness. You will need to provide the Venue Management Team with a certificate of currency (Workers Compensation Insurance). The Workers Compensation Insurance is to be in the same name as the applicant/organisation.

Proof of charity and not for profit status

If you or your organisation is a Charity or a Not for Profit organisation and your event is raising money on behalf of a Charity then you may be eligible for a reduced application fee. You will need to supply a Certificate of Charity or Not for Profit Status and/or a Letter of Authority to Fundraise.

Site plan

A site plan which identifies the layout of your event, placement of any amusement devices, temporary structures such as fencing, toilet and waste facilities and vehicle access needs to accompany your application should this be required. The Venue Management Team will assist with approving the site plan template

The Great Hall

The Great Hall

The Great Hall was officially opened in 1973 and is the venue of many UON’s prestigious events including University graduations, Alumni awards, Orientation and conferences with a large open Foyer space that is perfect for registrations, exhibitions or catering.

The University of Newcastle’s Great Hall features a stepped auditorium, is fully air-conditioned and provides a large stage that can accommodate a full symphony orchestra. The total seating capacity of the Great Hall is 1,231 which includes 448 tiered seats and 783 removable auditorium seating which means we are flexible with the set up arrangement of your event. The Great Hall can be set up for many types of events, seated dinner, dance shows and even expos.

The University of Newcastle has a great variety of lecture theatre and classrooms available for hire. Many of the rooms have the very latest technology and have been refurbished. We have spaces available that range in capacity from 20 persons to 813 persons available for your hire.

Bar on the Hill

The Bar on the Hill is the centre of entertainment at the University of Newcastle and is available for hire for a range of functions from gigs, weddings, trivia nights, music nights, school discos or any other amazing event you come up with.

Local Connections is the University’s first foray into fine dining.

Nestled in the lush bushland setting of our Callaghan campus, Local Connections aims to highlight the connection between the University and the local community. In line with the University's Environmental Sustainability Plan 2019-2025, Local Connections is committed to being eco-friendly through recycling, remaining plastic-free and reducing food waste.

The Forum

The Forum

NUsport manages a range of world-class sporting facilities for hire at Callaghan campus.The Forum Sports and Aquatic Centre offers an eight lane 50 meter indoor heated pool with seating for 400 spectators. Also available are two multipurpose courts for activities such as basketball, volleyball, netball and badminton, Five sporting ovals with high quality surfaces are available at this campus.
