“The University of Newcastle Council is responsible for determining and approving the Vice Chancellor’s terms and conditions of employment.

Professor Zelinsky was recruited in 2018 following a global search which attracted an outstanding field of candidates. Salary was an important element of the University’s offer and had to be competitive to attract a suitably talented Vice Chancellor to our region.
Professor Zelinsky’s salary was set at the mid-range of his peers across the sector.
University Council supports and has applied the University Chancellors Council guidelines dealing with senior executive remuneration.
As part of the renewal of the Vice Chancellor’s contract in November 2021, we offered a new 5 year contract consistent with the University Chancellors Council guidelines.
We understand the Vice Chancellor returned part of his pay rise back to the University as part of a substantial donation on the March 2022 Gifting Day .”
