University of Newcastle appoints new Executive Director of Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER)
The University of Newcastle has announced the appointment of Dr Paul Ebert as the incoming Executive Director of the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), following an extensive international search.
A proud Novocastrian and alumnus of the University of Newcastle, Dr Ebert brings nearly two decades of global leadership experience in the energy, chemicals and resources sector. Most recently Dr Ebert served as Group Director Sustainability and Energy Transition Leadership at Worley, a global engineering services company with more than 50,000 employees.
Dr Ebert has played a pivotal role in advancing low-emissions energy strategies and forging partnerships with leading organisations including Shell, Google, Saudi Aramco, and Princeton University. He has also worked closely with major Australian companies such as Qantas and Rio Tinto, and consulted extensively with businesses across the Hunter region.
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO said Dr Ebert’s appointment marks an exciting new chapter for NIER.
“Dr Ebert is an outstanding leader with deep expertise in energy transition and sustainability. His global experience and strong local connections will help NIER continue to deliver innovative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges,” Professor Zelinsky said.
“As an alumnus of our University, Paul understands the importance of industry-engaged research and the role NIER plays in driving economic and environmental outcomes for our region and beyond.”
NIER’s unique industry-engaged research model connects the University with industry partners to deliver real-world solutions in clean energy, resources, food and water sectors. By fostering innovation and collaboration, NIER supports the development of future industries and skills that underpin regional prosperity and national competitiveness in a low-carbon economy.
Dr Ebert will commence in March 2026, succeeding Professor Alan Broadfoot, who has led NIER since its inception in 2010. Under Professor Broadfoot’s leadership, NIER has grown into a nationally and globally recognised research precinct, supporting over 200 PhD students,19 research centres and groups, and collaborated with almost 200 industry partners to make real-world impact through research and innovation, in Australia and globally.
Professor Zelinsky acknowledged Professor Alan Broadfoot’s significant contribution to the University of Newcastle and NIER.
“Professor Broadfoot’s vision and leadership have been instrumental in establishing NIER as a powerhouse of industry collaboration and innovation. Alan’s legacy will continue to shape the University’s research impact for years to come,” added Professor Zelinsky.
“Our University is extremely grateful for all that Alan has done in establishing and growing NIER to be nationally and globally recognised for its unique industry engaged research model. Alan’s leadership has transformed NIER into a catalyst for clean energy innovation, helping position the Hunter and Australia at the forefront of the global energy transition.”
Professor Broadfoot will remain at the University in the Research and Innovation Division, assisting the transition of Dr Ebert into his new position while continuing to oversee major initiatives - the Energy Skills Hub and Future Industries Facility.
