Library system upgrade and changes to inter-library loans

Thursday, 20 October 2022

In the last few years there has been a significant reduction in the number of physical items available for University of Newcastle staff and students to borrow through BONUS+, with only two out of the original twelve member institutions still participating. As a result, the BONUS+ borrowing consortia will be dissolving at the end of 2022.

The good news is that in February 2023 the library will be launching a new and improved library services platform. This will enable much wider access to physical and digital items from university libraries within Australia, and to copies of articles and book chapters from hundreds of institutions across the globe. Our new resource discovery layer will provide a “one stop shop” for finding and requesting resources.

To enable us to transition our services to this new resource sharing network we will need to start decommissioning the BONUS+ and ArticleReach systems prior to the new library platform launch.

During the transition we ask clients to please place requests for all items and articles from other libraries through the Get It system, which will remain unaffected throughout this period.

Timing of changes for BONUS+, ArticleReach, and Inter-Library Loans:

14th November 2022

  • Requests for books through BONUS+ will cease
  • Requests for books, chapters and articles can still be submitted through Get It

2nd December 2022

  • All current BONUS+ items on loan from other institutions must be returned
  • Requests for articles through ArticleReach will cease
  • Requests for books, chapters and articles can still be submitted through Get It

February 2023

  • New library services platform launch – all searching and requests for resources will be via our new discovery layer.

What do I need to do?

From 14th November place all inter-library requests for books, chapters and articles through Get It, and return any BONUS+ borrowed books by 2nd December.

Does this mean I’ll have access to fewer resources?

Our new resource sharing network will expand the number of collections and items directly available to University of Newcastle staff and students. Many of the Australian university libraries who participate were also previously members of the BONUS+ consortia.

What else will change when the new library services platform launches?

We’re currently working hard on the initial stages of the project and are excited to share all the new features and improvements with you as we move forward. We’ll be running demonstrations, drop-in sessions, and Q&As as we get closer to go-live!
