The University of Newcastle is continuing its investment in the Callaghan Campus, having submitted a Regionally Significant Development Application (RSDA) for the construction of a new student accommodation building.

Proposed Callaghan Campus Student Accommodation render

The eight-storey building will provide 450 beds in a mix of single studios and shared living clusters, as well as student communal spaces and back of house amenities. The development is targeting a 5 star certified green rating.

University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky AO said the RSDA has now been formally submitted to the Hunter and Central Coast Regional Planning Panel.

“Providing high-quality student accommodation is one of our highest priorities and essential to attracting and supporting students,” said Professor Zelinsky.

“The proposed development will offer safe and secure housing at our Callaghan campus, helping us meet the ongoing demand for student accommodation, while fostering a sense of community and acting as a central hub for campus life.”

“With a mix of room types to suit different needs and budgets, it has been designed to support our growing and diverse student community.”

As part of the development assessment process, the RSDA is now open for public exhibition for 14 days, providing an opportunity for community members and interested parties to submit feedback on the project.

This follows the University’s community consultation held earlier this year, which was submitted as part of the RSDA.

Pending approval, construction is forecasted to commence in 2026. The community will be kept informed about the timing of construction commencement.

The application is available to view on Council’s website and the NSW Planning Portal via the application tracker page.
