National University Teaching Awards celebrate exceptional University of Newcastle educators

Four academics from the University of Newcastle have been honoured with prestigious Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT).

Established in 1997 by the Australian Government, AAUT honour and recognise excellence in university teaching.

University of Newcastle Bachelor of Science Transdisciplinary Team, Associate Professor Liam Phelan and Associate Professor Bonnie McBain have been the successful recipients of an Award for Programs that Enhance Learning in the Curriculum Transformation and Innovative Pedagogy subcategory. One of only four awards given in this category, this award acknowledges innovative and outstanding contributions to learning and teaching programs that have enriched the student experience.

Associate Professor Xanthe Mallett and Dr Melissa Tadros have been awarded Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, which honour the diversity of contributions made by individuals and teams to the quality of student learning in higher education.

University of Newcastle Bachelor of Science Transdisciplinary Team, Associate Professor Liam Phelan and Associate Professor Bonnie McBain received an Award for Programs that Enhance Learning for transforming the Bachelor of Science program to improve student engagement, teamwork and communication skills and increase cross-discipline learning and disciplinary pathways.

Through the development of five new science core courses, students will engage in content that has been designed to integrate industry relevance, transferable skills, and employability in a way that distinguishes the University’s new program from science degrees nationally and globally.

School of Law and Justice

Associate Professor Xanthe Mallett has been awarded a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning for pioneering the University of Newcastle Justice Clinic, and making ‘true crime’ an innovated, authentic placement experience for criminology, law and psychology students seeking client justice.

Since 2019, the Justice Clinic has supervised more than 450 student placements, assisting 25 clients and providing a tranformative student learning experience.

School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy

Dr Melissa Tadros has been awarded a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning for sustained commitment to enhancing student engagement, success and inclusion in biomedical education using digital tools that emphasise a personal teaching style, inspiring diverse cohorts.

Over 12 years, Dr Tadros has contributed to 16 undergraduate and postgraduate human biomedicine courses, designing and presenting material in a way that increases student motivation and involvement, facilitating deep understanding of complex content.
