2023 King’s Birthday Honours celebrates outstanding Australians

The University of Newcastle proudly congratulates the achievements of all Australians recognised in the 2023 King’s Birthday Honours, particularly those who are part of the University’s diverse community.

Congratulations to all the 2023 King's Birthday Honour recipients, including Mr Sean Gordon, a proud Wangkumarra and Barkindji man who has been appointed Member (AM) In the General Division

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, said the University was delighted to celebrate the excellence of our staff, alumni and donors who have been recognised in today’s Honours List.

“I’d like to extend my congratulations to those members of our University community who have been recognised today for their commitment and impact in our region and beyond,” said Professor Zelinsky.

“This honour is so well deserved, and I am proud to be part of an institution working alongside such passionate leaders in their fields.”

The University-affiliated recipients include:

Member of the Order of Australia (AM)

  • Sean Anthony Gordon for significant service to the Indigenous community as an advocate for equity.
  • Dr David Charles Hughes for significant service to sports medicine as an administrator and elite athlete physician.
  • Professor Danielle Mazza for significant service to medicine and to medical research, particularly to women's health.
  • The Honourable Graham Robert Mullane for significant service to the judiciary, and to the law, and to the community.
  • Professor David Glen Newman for significant service to aerospace medicine.
  • Scientia Professor Carla Justine Treloar for significant service to social research, and to tertiary education.
  • Professor Gail Elizabeth Whiteford for significant service to tertiary education, and to community health.

Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM)

  • Ms Vivienne Allanson for service to the aged care sector.
  • Mr John Conaghan for service to people with Huntington's Disease.
  • Dr Clement Joseph Gordon for service to medicine, and to the community
  • Ms Elizabeth Anna Grist for service to community health, and to nursing and midwifery.
  • Dr Rosemary Ann Hackworthy for service to medicine as a cardiologist.

Public Service Medal (PSM)

  • Ms Amanda-Lee Charlton for outstanding public service through leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Mr Jacob Israel Jackson for outstanding public service in the implementation of Rapid Antigen Screening for Corrective Services NSW.

The 2023 King’s Birthday Honours list recognises 1,192 outstanding and inspirational Australians.
