Callaghan Campus Heart

The Callaghan Campus Heart project, located at the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus, is now complete, creating a vibrant, student and community focused centre of activity.

The project has consolidated key services, retail options, and events into a dynamic central hub, providing a destination that is activated through the day and supports evening and weekend events.

The Callaghan Campus Heart project reflects the university's commitment to fostering a vibrant and dynamic campus life that attracts students, staff, industry partners, and the community while improving access to academic and support services.

Upgrades have been delivered across the Auchmuty Library, Language Centre, Shortland Building and The Beryl Nashar (GP) Building, strengthening student engagement, accessibility and service integration.

Shortland Building

The Shortland Building has become a central location for student-focused events, activities and engagement, enhanced with new spaces to support campus life such as new facilities for The University of Newcastle Students’ Association (UNSA), a new commercial kitchen and a student lounge.

Level 2 is now home to The Nook, a dynamic student collaboration space named through a University-wide student vote. The Nook also includes a dedicated gallery area for showcasing student work, with new art display boxes and picture rails to support upcoming exhibitions.

Auchmuty Library

With a focus on student engagement, accessibility and inclusion, a new Central Service Point and ASKUoN hub has been be incorporated into the Auchmuty Library along with a refresh of the reading room on level four. The upgrades have created a vibrant, welcoming place where students can find a quiet space to study and access the support and services they need to succeed.

Language Centre

The refresh of the Language Centre has seen existing rooms transformed into contemporary workspaces, providing more room for Student Central’s program advice and international student support teams in close proximity to the new Central Service Point in Auchmuty Library.
