Every year our NU Racing team conceives, designs, fabricates and races with a small formula style racing car in the SAE-Australasian Formula competition.
Admission to our undergraduate degree programs usually requires successful completion of a senior secondary school qualification similar to the Higher School Certificate (HSC), the highest educational award in New South Wales schools.

Where do mechanical engineers find jobs? Everywhere.
At UON we train engineers capable of solving the world’s greatest challenges. As a mechanical engineering student at UON, your degree will prepare you to help address the world’s future energy needs by taking biomass, wind and tidal power solutions to the next level. You could learn to design self-driving farm machinery for ultra efficient food production, or develop the skills to tackle health issues by building revolutionary biomechanical solutions for people with disabilities.
What is mechanical engineering? Mechanical engineers design, manufacture and optimise specialist machines and processes. As part of your Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering you will study how to solve important problems. Your core courses in mechanical engineering will teach you to develop solutions using robotics, new advanced materials, the fundamental laws of energy generation and transmission, and the computer control of physical systems - from nano to mega-tonne scale. Your degree could lead to work on everything from power plants, to air conditioners, aircraft engines and racecars.
Why combine surveying with business? Complete these two bachelor degrees in just five years - compliment your technical skills with business acumen. Learn how to manage people and projects, start a consulting firm and manage a business. Prepare yourself for a leadership role with this unique package of capabilities.
Learn critical technical and mechanical engineering skills by studying courses in:
Connect with the mechanical engineering industry through guest lectures and interdisciplinary projects solving real world problems. Gain invaluable practical experience through your industry placement.
Become job-ready through our professional practice courses. You'll learn to tackle ‘wicked problems’ and develop essential workplace skills in finance, project management, sustainability, communication and entrepreneurism.
Develop your business skills in:
Download a program plan for further details on your degree's structure and what courses you will study.
These program plans are applicable to new students. Current students should refer to the program handbook to access the plan relevant to the year they commenced.
Almost all industries need mechanical engineers. They work in medical, transport, automotive, aerospace, electronics, and mining industries, and in growth sectors like renewable energy, robotics, automation and advanced manufacturing.
Mechanical engineering is flexible and diverse. You may prefer hands-on fieldwork, design and development, or a leadership role managing people and projects. Typical positions include:
Remarkably, engineering is the most commonly held degree among the highest performing Fortune 500 CEOs – the CEOs of companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Tesla Motors are all engineers.
The combined degree advantage: your business skills will help you move into leadership roles, support you to start your own business or take your technical skills into a different work environment altogether.
All UON engineering students have the opportunity to complete 12 weeks of industrial experience during their degree. This can be completed in one block or as shorter placements of no less than two weeks. Through your work placement you’ll build important professional networks and put your learning into practice.
