Text to Vector - Generative AI tools

This resource looks at ways to create vector files using AI generators.

Using AI-generated images through text to vector generators can be a useful way to create specific images for your teaching. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind before including these images in your course. Please review our resource on important considerations before creating images using Ai.

Vector files

Vector files are great for scalable shapes without loss of quality. They are ideal for designing icons, logos, graphs & charts, illustrations & typography.

Creating vector files is possible using AI generators and involves a few steps:

  1. Choose an AI generator - select a tool that offers AI vectorisation features
  2. Either place an image (jpg or png) or enter a text prompt of something you’d like to create
  3. Convert to vector - Ai will process the image or text prompt and create a vector file, typically in formats like SVG, EPS, or PDF.

Adobe Firefly and Illustrator

Adobe Firefly is the AI generator used to create text-to-vector graphics within Adobe Illustrator (part of Adobe Creative Cloud suite available to some University staff).

To access Adobe Firefly:

  • Open Adobe Illustrator through your Adobe Creative Cloud enterprise account
  • In Illustrator go to Window on the top menu and scroll down to text to vector
  • In the prompt field enter descriptive words like ‘colourful flowers in blue vase’ and selected generate
  • A vector image is generated. To export the file, go to export, export as, and save as an eps or jpeg. Note, jpeg would be better for importing into your Canvas course.

Other options (requiring paid subscriptions):

  • Kittl - text-to-vector feature and generates vector icons and illustrations from a text prompts
  • Vectoriser.ai - convert PNG and JPG images to SVG vectors
  • Vector Magic - convert JPG, PNG, GIF Files to PDF, SVG, EPS vectors.

Alt Text

For accessibility purposes, it is essential to include Alt text with any images being generated.  Generative AI can also be prompted to determine relevant Alt text for any images you generate or upload. Alt text is a short text sentence that describes what an image shows.  Alt text can be read by screen readers for the visually impaired, search engines and also if there is low bandwidth.
