Career-ready placements

Successful engagement with a range of partners is key to improving the health of the broader community. We are proud of our strong and valuable connections to government bodies, industry and our community.

For our students, these collaborations ensure an enriched learning experience where they can continually put into practice the theory and hands-on skills they learn throughout their  degree. Our large geographical footprint – which includes partnerships with 17 Local Health Districts including Hunter New England, Central Coast and Mid North Coast  - offers a variety of urban, regional or remote placement experiences. Housed under the same roof as the Central Coast Research Institute, our state-of-the-art Central Coast Clinical School is located on the doorstep of Gosford Hospital.

Our Department of Rural Health, led by Professor Jennifer May AM Head of Rural Education and Research, supports student placements and learning in health and medicine programs across regional, rural and remote NSW. Funded by the Australian Government Department of Health under the Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training program, students are supporting the provision of healthcare in our regions and are inspired to pursue careers in rural locations.

For our researchers, relationships provide the foundation for growth and the potential for breakthrough discoveries and innovation. The Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) is a tangible example of exactly that. Established in 1998, HMRI has grown to become one of the state's leading Institutes, drawing together basic biomedical, clinical and public health researchers from Hunter New England Local Health District, the University of Newcastle and Calvary Mater Newcastle. We work closely with the community on research that benefits their health and wellbeing – each year thousands of individuals participate in our studies.

Through partnerships we strengthen opportunities to create better, healthier living for people in our communities. For example, our Central Coast Research Institute for Integrated Care and Population Health - a partnership with the Central Coast Local Health District - champions integrated healthcare to improve the overall wellbeing of people on the Coast.

We welcome opportunities to collaborate and broaden the learning experience for our students. From speaking at our David Maddison Lecture, hosting a clinical skills training workshop for students, or working with us on a research project – and plenty more.
