FAQs by parents and carers

We know it can be overwhelming knowing how to support your child with making an application for university.  A great place to start is checking out the Getting In page on our website where you can find information about all our entry schemes and admissions pathways.

If your child is a current domestic Year 12 student completing the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate (ACT SSC), they may be eligible for an early offer through our Early Entry Program.  Early entry takes into account a student’s Year 11 results, allowing them to secure an offer before HSC exams begin.

If your child doesn’t receive an early offer, they’ll need to apply to university through UAC. They can select up to five degrees to add to their UAC preferences list. The first degree that they select should be the degree that they want to study the most. The order can change during each offer round by logging into UAC. Preferences two to five are their back up options.

You can help them to choose degrees that are similar or have a lower selection rank, or you can encourage them to consider adding an alternate pathway such as a Diploma or Open Foundation just in case.

The UAC website has a list of key dates to be mindful of. Note these down and remind your child as each date approache.

We have a wide variety of support services available for all students including academic learning support, counselling, health services, security and more.

Visit our support pages for further information on student support services.

When choosing subjects for Year 11 and 12, we encourage students to select subjects they enjoy and that they enjoy doing at school. Your child could also check to see if there are any subjects recommended by the university they would like to study at.

For advice on subject selection you can check out our Year 10 Guide to University.

A student’s tuition fees will vary depending on what level of education they are receiving, as well as factors such as whether they receive Commonwealth assistance, are an international student, or are studying part time. For further information, please visit our types of tuition fees.

Your child should also consider other costs that may be associated with studying at university including accommodation fees, living out of home and textbooks. The good news is there are lots of ways your child can offset these costs such as Australian Government assistance with HECS-HELP loans and income support.

You can also encourage your child to apply for scholarships. Each year the University awards more than $4 million in scholarships to students. Check out our scholarships for more information.

There are also plenty of casual and part time jobs available on campus to help students earn some extra money while building professional skills. Jobs on Campus advertises a wide range of paid roles throughout the year, while our Careers Service can assist students with preparing for job applications and interviews.

We have on-campus accommodation options at our Callaghan and Ourimbah campuses. You can see details about our different residences, room fees and how to apply for on-campus accommodation on our Student Living pages.

You can also find information about local off-campus accommodation options, including Homestay.
