UON students animate another quirky clip

Aussie band Peking Duk struck gold when they convinced Orange Is The New Black legend Matt McGorry to star in their clip for Say My Name, and now a group of UON animation students have turned the band’s work into rotoscoped technicolour.

UON students animate another quirky clip

Hot on the heels of their animation success with Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off which went viral internationally with over 1.3 million views, and their work with Daniel Johns rotoscoping the official clip for Going On 16, the animators have gone with a new target.

Say My Name has been animated, frame-by-frame, by 45 Animation students at the University of Newcastle in an assessment task with a difference.

Each student was given 55 frames of footage from the clip (around 4.5 seconds) and told to go crazy – and they certainly did.

Animation lecturer Jane Shadbolt says it’s hard to improve on the perfection of the original with Matt McGorry in all his mulleted glory proudly sporting a handlebar moustache and red cowboy boots – but these students gave it their best and then some.

From a twerking McGorry clad only in those cowboy boots, to an intricately hand-drawn and coloured homages to Deadpool and Dr Seuss characters – there’s nary a pop-culture reference that these students haven't drawn on.

“I’m always blown away by the work these students come up with – they got so into the project and have come up with a clip that’s just awesome,” says Jane.

Rotoscoping is a method of tracing over live-action footage. It’s been around since animation first began, in fact it was used extensively in Disney’s Snow White.
