The University Of Newcastle (UON) has achieved the highest possible '5' rating across 22 fields of research in the latest Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment, placing it in the Top 8 Universities in Australia on this measure of excellence.

UON's performance under the 2015 ERA assessment is its strongest to date, with 90 per cent of UON research submitted (52 codes) rated at 'world standard and above', affirming UON's emergence as a major research intensive university in an important region in Australia.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation), Professor Kevin Hall, said UON had surpassed its 2012 result, reflecting the institution's continued upward trajectory of delivering research excellence and impact.

"The University of Newcastle has achieved year on year improvement under the ERA assessment, which is wonderful acknowledgement for our talented and passionate researchers."

"While we excelled in the '5' category, particularly in the fields of engineering, science, medicine and health we are equally proud of our exceptional performance in the important '4' category, for research above world standard, confirming our research strengths across comprehensive range of fields across business, sociology and humanities" said Professor Hall.

UON dramatically expanded its performance under the '4' rating, for research rated 'above world standard' almost doubling the number of fields of research in this category from nine to 16.

University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, said the University's outstanding ERA result was important given the critical role that research-intensive universities play in driving world class innovation and entrepreneurship in their regions, nationally and internationally.

"As a global leader, it is our first rate education and research programs that ensure our graduates will be part of the innovation future of Australia and drive the innovation that will be critical for economic growth and transition."
