Research

Our research embraces a diverse range of disciplines throughout our four Schools. Extending across traditional, emerging and cross-disciplinary fields of knowledge, we pursue discoveries that contribute to shaping and improving our society.

We challenge

Our research responds to challenges that touch every part of the community and has global impact. Researching the effects of physical activity and fitness on young people’s cognitive and mental health. Digitally mapping the massacres of Australia’s colonial frontier. Contributing to analysis of healthcare systems across the world in light of COVID-19. We are committed to bringing our knowledge expertise to help solve pressing global challenges.

From the historical roots of contemporary violence to global language loss, trade tensions and human rights protection, we respond to some of the major issues of our age. We look to the past to better understand the future. We find creative solutions that contribute to sustainable enterprises and a more just and equitable society.

We excel

We are home to some of the world’s most outstanding scholars and our Research Centres are engaged in excellent research that has impact. For example, the Teachers and Teaching Research Centre has created a model of pedagogy and an approach to teacher development that are now embedded in education systems and education policy, especially in NSW and the ACT. This work has profoundly shaped how quality teaching is conceptualised, taught, and researched in Australia. The Centre for Active Living and Learning features a team of highly cited researchers. Demonstrating exceptional influence, these researchers have published multiple papers which are among the most cited by their peers throughout the last decade. The Centre for the Study of Violence is internationally recognised as a leading group in the interdisciplinary study of violence and has been awarded four prestigious ARC fellowships. The Centre for Law and Social Justice operates as a dynamic hub to drive Social Justice reform and contribute to law reform and policy making.

We collaborate

We welcome the opportunity to pursue new and innovative research - whether it’s with community, industry or government in our region, across the nation or internationally. Our collaborative partnerships transform evidence-based research into impactful solutions.

The Centre of Excellence for Equity in Higher Education (CEEHE) is an example of one of the many successful research partnerships we have forged. Our people are helping to transform educational spaces, with equity at the forefront. We’re rapidly building our research strengths in both the legal and creative spaces with initiatives such as the Law and Justice Centre and FASTLAB – a collaborative hub for thinkers, creatives and industry. Our Value in Health Economics and Policy group attracts interdisciplinary and multi-institutional representation to research topics relating to health and healthcare systems.

Our strong, regional links help build the bridge from research to impact. For example, our research is helping the local wine industry to compete in a global market, we are examining the inequalities that affect young people’s lives, and we are collaborating with councils to improve regional tourism.
