Foreign Language Courses

The College of Human and Social Futures at the University of Newcastle is proud to offer language courses in French, Mandarin and Indonesian for Year 11 and 12 students.

  • French is spoken on all continents
  • Mandarin Chinese is one of the most spoken languages in the world
  • Indonesian is the language of our immediate neighbour

All three languages are spoken in the Asia-Pacific region to which Australia belongs and in countries that have major trade and diplomatic agreements with our country.

The benefits of learning a foreign language are numerous. In addition to increased employability prospects, it allows for a better command of one's own language and an essential awareness of different perspectives and worldviews.

For a nominal fee, we would like to give access to our regular courses at the beginner level for the three languages, and at the intermediate and advanced levels for French. Classes will be offered face-to-face on the Callaghan campus between 4 pm and 6 pm once a week for 12 weeks per semester. The instructors are native or bilingual speakers and specialists in second language acquisition.

Study French

French is the second most widely learned foreign language after English, and the fifth most widely spoken language in the world. As one of the world’s largest economies and a leading destination for foreign investment, France is a key economic partner. It is also the official language of several major international organisations such as the United Nations, UNESCO, and the International Olympic Committee.

Study Indonesian

There is a growing international demand for graduates who understand the Indonesian language and culture. Indonesia is Australia’s nearest international neighbour and the third largest democratic nation in the world. With a population of over 275 million people and with its strong connection to the Malay language, Bahasa Indonesia is the most widely spoken language in South East Asia.

Study Mandarin Chinese

With over 900 million native speakers, Mandarin Chinese is becoming essential for modern graduates. As China’s economic growth continues, the ability to speak the language is enormously valuable if you’re pursuing a career that involves working with Chinese stakeholders.
