Sustainable and Responsible Futures

About

The Newcastle Business School Sustainability cluster is a broad network of scholars researching some of the key challenges facing society today. The cluster represents a collective of researchers working collaboratively across sustainability, business and the environment in Newcastle Business School.

Researchers from Professors to PhD students work side-by-side within the cluster to share skills and expertise. The cluster involves researchers who use both quantitative and qualitative methods, working on topics such as:

  • Sustainable economic development;
  • Social innovation and entrepreneurship;
  • The politics of climate change;
  • Climate adaptation in business and industry;
  • Corporate social responsibility;
  • Carbon markets and accounting;
  • Social and psychological impacts of environmental change

In doing so, our work feeds into the six PRME principles and contributes to moving society and business towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

Purpose

The goal of the cluster is to encourage new ways of considering sustainability in both the public arena and academia. Industry, governments and communities have a shared responsibility to respond to the key challenges of maintaining a liveable planet while alleviating economic and other social inequalities. By engaging on a range of topics – from the environment, to health and housing – the cluster brings a unique perspective into the business school which focusses on the possibilities for business and industry to contribute to alleviating these crucial issues. Through working together, we seek to influence the public sphere to consider new and innovative ways of improving the health of both the planet and the economy.

Outcomes

The sustainability cluster meets regularly, with a range of skill-shares and research workshops. We work together to share teaching resources, ideas for paper development, assist with grant writing, and hold an annual Symposium. In 2020, under the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Symposium was held online and had the theme of ‘Sustainability in Uncertain Times‘. With over 40 participants presenting papers and signing up as discussants, the Symposium showed the strength and value placed in collaborative work.
