About the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences

The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences has established an enviable reputation for our teaching and research standards largely due to our high-calibre staff.

In response to the demand for graduates with quantitative and analytical skills, we have a range of flexible degree options for students to tailor their studies.

Welcome from the Head of School

Professor Thomas Nann

With the world’s attention narrowing in on the growing STEMM fields, the School of Mathematical and Physical Science (MAPS) has placed itself squarely at the centre of this global phenomena.

If you join MAPS as a student, you will have the option to study a range of flexible degree options that draw from key STEMM areas including mathematics, statistics and physics. The programs and courses available are designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to excel within their chosen field, or be transferred and adapted to open up exciting career opportunities in industries including finance, defence, manufacturing, research, education, government and policy, and many more.

In terms of research, our applied mathematics, statistics, physical sciences, and astronomical and space science fields have been ranked as ‘Well above world standard’ in the most recent ERA Rankings, cementing MAPS place as one of the University of Newcastle’s strongest performing schools.
