Student's Union

The University of Newcastle recognises the independent students' union, embody by the University of Newcastle Students' Association (UNSA). Our student union supports and represents over 30,000 students at all on‑shore locations as well as 4,000+ students studying online (the Cloud Campus).

The organisation was formed on 1 July 2020, replacing the three previous separate student associations: NUSA, NUPSA and Yourimbah. UNSA provides a broad range of services including welfare & wellbeing, clubs & societies support, advocacy and social & cultural activities. It is governed by a Student Representative Council (SRC) elected by students, plus a Board of Directors which includes student‑elected members and external directors.

  • UNSA is a not‑for‑profit, student‑led organisation whose purpose is to positively impact students’ experiences in educational, welfare and wellbeing matters, as well as through extra‑curricular and out‑of‑class engagement.
  • UNSA supports students at all on‑shore campuses (Callaghan, Newcastle, Ourimbah, Port Macquarie, Sydney) and those studying online through Cloud Campus.
  • Governance is via a Student Representative Council of 18 student representatives, elected annually (Semester 2); the SRC Executive and three external directors form part of the UNSA Board.
  • UNSA delivers a suite of student‑centred services: e.g. welfare support, support for clubs & societies, extra‑curricular events, and services to enhance student life.

2024 UNSA‑Led Campaigns & Initiatives

  1. Food Pantry
In 2024, UNSA continued the Food Pantry project, aimed at helping students who are experiencing financial hardship, short on time, or otherwise vulnerable. The Pantry accepts donations of sealed items via drop‑off bins (e.g. at Shop101 Ourimbah, UNSA Building at Callaghan, Shortland Building), which are then distributed to students.
  2. Free Food Fridays
Each week, UNSA holds Free Food Friday in partnership with OzHarvest. Surplus food (fresh produce, bread, etc.) is redistributed and made available free to students, with no cost and no catches. This helps many students who might be food insecure to get essential supplies.
  3. Discounted First Aid & Mental Health First Aid Courses
As part of its student wellbeing programs, UNSA provides discounted First Aid and Mental Health First Aid training, supported via the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). This helps students gain useful skills affordably.
  4. HEARD – Helping Everyone Achieve Respect & Dignity
In 2024, UNSA organised “HEARD”, an inclusive event held at the Ourimbah Campus intended to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The event was built around food, stalls, music, and cultural participation, involving clubs and equity and diversity groups. It was one way UNSA facilitated student engagement on issues of equity, culture, identity and inclusion.
  5. Student Experience Awards
UNSA partners with the University in celebrating students who go above and beyond in leadership, advocacy, volunteering, volunteering, cultural/community engagement etc. In 2024 the Student Experience Awards include categories recognising undergraduate & postgraduate contributions: for example, Peer Support, Campus Contribution, Student Excellence, Student Perseverance etc. These awards help shine a light on student‑led positive actions, not just academic achievement.

These initiatives show that UNSA is more than a formal body: it’s actively engaged in providing welfare support, creating inclusion, helping students connect, reduce financial stress, and making things happen on‑campus.
