Life Below Water

Conservation and Sustainable Utilisation of the Oceans
The University of Newcastle supports and organises events explicitly aimed at promoting conservation and the sustainable utilisation of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and marine resources, especially in collaboration with Pacific communities.
2024 Highlights:
- The University welcomed several Pacific Island PhD students via scholarships through the Global Impact Cluster for Energy, Resources, Food and Water (GIC ERFW), whose research focuses on ecosystem‑based adaptation, marine pollution, biodiversity protection, and environmental governance in vulnerable island and ocean ecosystems.
- As part of our “Pacific Engagement” and “Pacific Node” initiatives, the University delivers knowledge‑sharing, capacity development, and community outreach that address ocean health, including projects such as microplastics monitoring in Samoa in cooperation with Samoan institutions.
