About
With locations on both Awabakal and Darkinjung Country, Wollotuka is a home away from home for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from across the country. We support the largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cohort of any Australian university, with our own bridging programs and undergraduate program.
Our history
In the 1980s, a small passionate team advocated for the establishment of a support unit for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at the University of Newcastle. This was the beginning of the Wollotuka Institute, which now provides academic and cultural support to hundreds of students across the University. Originally a support unit for the College of Advanced Education underneath the old library, it was in the words of early participants, “six students and a leaky tap”. But it wasn’t to stay this way.
During the 1990s, we moved beyond support to make and teach its own courses. This began with a bridging program, now known as Yapug, and by 1999, we expanded to include a new Bachelor of Aboriginal Studies and a higher education research centre, Umulliko.
In 2002, we moved into the now famous Birabahn building on Callaghan campus while also joining with the Gibalee Centre on the Central Coast. In 2009, our functions were formally merged to become an Institute and in 2015, we became the first Australian organisation to gain accreditation from the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium.
In 2023, we celebrated our 40th anniversary and completed a merger with the University’s Office of Indigenous Strategy and Leadership.
Our governance
Nguraki Elders Group
The Wollotuka Institute is guided by the teachings of our Nguraki (Elders/cultural mentors) whose wisdoms are respected and honoured. Our Nguraki and Community played a pivotal role in shaping and developing a locally defined set of Cultural Standards which reflect and embrace the cultural essence to which our goals are directed and to guide how we operate.
BATSIER
The Board of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education and Research (BATSIER) is a body that advises the University’s Vice-Chancellor. BATSIER champions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education and training policies and strategies and ensures the University’s work in this space is aligned to the community’s needs and wishes.

Our locations
We offer support across various campuses, with a catchment area stretching out across multiple traditional countries.
Our presence at the Callaghan Campus, the traditional lands of the Pambalong clan of the Awabakal people, is centred on the acclaimed Birabahn Building. The design of the building resembles the Eaglehawk, known as Birabahn in the Awabakal language, and also pays respect to the memory of Birabahn the man and scholar, an important figure during the early colonial era. The Birabahn building (SAS) is located next to the Design Bus Stop along Ring Road.
Our Ourimbah base sits on the lands of the Darkinjung people. Ringed by tall ridges, this place was traditionally known as a meeting and ceremony place, a heritage that Wollotuka hopes to honour today. Our space is amongst Student Amenities, directly opposite the Retail Shop, and backs out on to a purpose made yarning circle and the Ganda Burung food court, meaning “food shelter” in the Darkinjung language.
Our emerging presence at NUspace in the city is located on the first floor of the building, in X111. Currently staffed intermittently, this room operates as a student hub with stationary and tea/coffee supplies, learning resources and room to spread out and study.
The University of Newcastle acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands within our footprint areas: Awabakal, Darkinjung, Biripai, Worimi, Wonnarua, and Eora Nations. We also pay respect to the wisdom of our Elders past and present.
