Situated on the corner of Civic Lane and Worth Place, the proposed new building will accommodate up to 445 beds, offering students an inner-city living experience while injecting new life and vibrancy into the Honeysuckle precinct area in Newcastle.
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO said the tender process was extremely competitive, with a number of high-calibre applicants throwing their hats in the ring, but it was Hansen Yuncken who was the successful contractor.
“It was incredible to see the quality of tender submissions for our new student accommodation. This highlights the strong interest in being part of such a project and demonstrates enthusiasm and commitment to supporting not only the higher-education sector but also students studying away from home,” Professor Zelinsky said.
“Hansen Yuncken’s tender submission showcased their dedication to achieving meaningful social outcomes, including opportunities for student engagement, a focus on involving local subcontractors, and ambitious targets for participation with Aboriginal people.
“This year, our University is marking its 60th anniversary, and projects like this new student accommodation in the heart of our city is a reminder of that strong connection we continue to grow with the people of this region.
The University of Newcastle achieved Gold Accreditation status in results announced by the Residential Experience Standard (RES) in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Student Accommodation Association (APSAA) at the end of last year.
“This accreditation measures student accommodation, facilities, support services, and overall student experience – including nurturing student mental and social wellbeing and personal safety.
“This recognition highlights our dedication to providing exceptional, student-driven accommodation and our strong commitment to enhancing student life and wellbeing.
“Our new City Campus Student Accommodation project will be the latest example of how we are creating a safe and vibrant place for our students to live and study away from home.”
Designed by Architectus, the new City Campus Student Accommodation is progressing the final aspects of the State Significant Development Application process, which is expected to conclude in the coming months.
