Statement by University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky:

Our University is a signatory to the ‘Charter on sexual harm’ released by Universities Australia.

The University of Newcastle is committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for everyone and it is important that all those who are part of our community know that sexual assault and sexual harassment are completely unacceptable.

While the community and our University have made progress, we know there is more to do. Our overall approach centres on education, and the development of a ‘culture of consent’ in the University community with the aim of preventing sexual assault and sexual harassment, and ensuring care and support is provided when reports are made.

We have a variety of programs in place for reporting and supporting victim/survivors, including access to our team of trained health professionals, a free counselling service and an after-hours support line that is operated by a team of qualified crisis support specialists. We continue to engage with a NSW Universities forum that shares best-practices in how to prevent sexual assault and harassment.

We know public discussion on this topic can be challenging for victim-survivors and encourage students seeking resources or support to visit our Respect at Uni webpage.
