University secures 7th Heart Foundation grant

Professor Aaron Sverdlov is the 7th University of Newcastle researcher to benefit from the 2021 Heart Foundation funding program.

Professor Aaron Sverdlov

Professor Sverdlov received a Future Leader Fellowship grant to advance research that will lead to strategies to protect the cardiovascular health of cancer patients.

Recent advances in cancer prevention and management have led to an exponential increase of cancer survivors. Unfortunately, this comes at the cost of increased treatment for side effects, including cardiovascular disease.  Additionally, cancer survivors are at higher risk of heart disease, not only because of their cancer therapy but because the risk factors for cancer are shared with those for heart disease.

Cardiovascular disease has now become one of the most devastating consequences of cancer therapies and is now a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among cancer survivors.

Professor Sverdlov's research project aims to reduce the burden of heart disease in people living with and beyond cancer.  He and his team will use the Heart Foundation funding to support the development of better and more personalised diagnostic, screening and treatment options.

In particular, they aim to identify medications that can be used to treat cancer and prevent heart disease and rapidly take them to clinical trials.  The research team will also plan to trial a new comprehensive, multidisciplinary model of care to assess, manage and prevent both current and future risk of heart disease.
