SSR was granted Australian Synchrotron merit time for structural characterisation of samples from Low Carbon Ironmaking Investigations

The blast furnace route accounts for 70% of global iron and steel production. Sustainable low carbon ironmaking requires us to investigate ways to decrease carbon dioxide emissions from the blast furnace, as well as looking into alternate methods for producing metallic iron. SSR is investigating low carbon blast furnace ironmaking incorporating hydrogen injection, and was granted Australian Synchrotron merit time in 2022 for this purpose.  A/Prof. Tom Honeyands and  Dr. Hamid Doostmohammadi used the X-ray CT Scanning technique at the Imaging Medical Beamline to study the structure of Australian iron ore reduced under hydrogen atmosphere in laboratory softening and melting tests.
