Collaborating for Change: Healthy Ageing Innovation Challenge Sparks Breakthrough Ideas for Equitable Ageing

Tuesday, 9 September 2025

In a vibrant show of collaboration, creativity, and community commitment, the Healthy Ageing Innovation Challenge wrapped up this past weekend at the I2N Hub Honeysuckle, leaving participants energised, inspired, and more confident in their ability to innovate solutions for some of society’s most pressing challenges.

Collaborating for Change: Healthy Ageing Innovation Challenge Sparks Breakthrough Ideas for Equitable Ageing

A joint initiative between the Hunter New England Central Coast Primary Health Network (HNECC PHN) and the University of Newcastle’s Integrated Innovation Network (I2N). The multi-part event set it's sights on an ambitious goal: to generate bold, actionable ideas that enhance equitable access to healthy ageing resources for older Australians, especially those from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds.

Australia is ageing rapidly, with nearly one in six Australians now over the age of 65, reimagining the way we support older adults is no longer optional. The Healthy Ageing Innovation Challenge was designed to tackle this complex issue head-on by empowering a unique mix of voices: students, researchers, entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals, tech developers, older adults with lived experience, and community advocates. Together, they explored one pivotal question:

“How might we improve and maintain equitable access to healthy ageing resources for older adults from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds in our communities?”

The event unfolded over three key stages:

1. Information Session (July 23, Online)

The journey began with an online information session that introduced the scope of the challenge and helped prospective participants understand the importance of designing inclusive ageing solutions. It also laid the groundwork for cross-disciplinary collaboration.

2. Expert Panel (July 31, I2N Hub Honeysuckle)

Held at the University’s cutting-edge innovation hub in Newcastle, the in-person expert panel brought together thought leaders in ageing, public health, and community innovation. Discussions ranged from systemic healthcare barriers to the digital divide affecting older Australians. The panel not only grounded the challenge in real-world contexts but also opened up crucial dialogue between emerging innovators and established sector leaders.

3. The Challenge Event (August 8–9, I2N Hub Honeysuckle)

Over an intense 16-hour innovation sprint across two days, multidisciplinary teams co-designed and prototyped solutions to improve access to healthy ageing resources. Ideas ranged from AI-powered health literacy platforms to community-driven mobility initiatives.

Following the event, participants shared:

“Pulling the top skills from each team member to support each other was the most valuable part of the experience.”

Others said:

“The speed of development for new AI tools was eye-opening.”

“The format was fantastic… and the connections I made were incredible.”

What’s Next?

While the challenge event has concluded, the impact continues. For the University of Newcastle, this challenge exemplified its strategic focus on community-connected innovation. Through I2N, the university is not only nurturing entrepreneurial mindsets but also addressing pressing societal issues, whether in healthcare, sustainability, or technology.
