The NUW Alliance welcomes the NSW Premier, Dominic Perrottet’s commitment of $260 million to establish an Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility (AMRF) at the coming Western Sydney Airport. The facility will bring universities and industry together to generate new technologies and globally competitive manufacturing innovations.

Professor Andy Marks, the NUW Alliance’s Chief Executive Officer said; “This is the moment we’ve been planning for. We’ve been listening to our industry partners, local and international, and we understand what is required to deliver a technology step change in advanced manufacturing.”

The NUW Alliance and industry colleagues are convinced Western Sydney – the nation’s fastest growing, and most diverse region – has the capacity to become a global leader in manufacturing innovation.

Professor Marks said, “We have focussed the distinct expertise we have across our four universities, along with the University of Technology Sydney to produce a plan for bringing the AMRF to life.” Released late last year, the NUW+UTS Research Vision for the AMRF, is the largest combined research vision of its kind in NSW.

Professor Marks added, “Our research vision sets out our 5-uni plan to deliver manufacturing innovations in composites, fabrication, alongside breakthroughs in neuromorphic science and quantum. We are talking about combining the very best expertise of our partners in world leading fields, and applying it at the AMRF.”

The universities are committed to making sure new technologies, developed at the AMRF, will be supported by accelerated advances in areas like cyber security, robotics, automation, virtual reality, augmented reality and human-machine interaction.

“This is an urgent task for universities, government, industry and the region. It is not just about technology or innovation, it is about making good on commitments to drive knowledge job creation in region’s like Western Sydney while ensuring areas like the Hunter, the Illawarra and wider Sydney can also benefit.” Said Professor Marks.

“A task of that magnitude can only be achieved through collaboration. That is what the NUW Alliance universities, along with UTS, are ready bring to the AMRF.”

About the NUW Alliance
The NUW Alliance comprises four leading Australian research-intensive universities – the University of Newcastle, UNSW, the University of Wollongong and Western Sydney University.

The NUW Alliance spans a geographic area home to more than 75% of NSW’s population and 25% of Australia’s. The size and scale of our Alliance has not been seen before in Australia – over 240,000 students plus 18,000 staff, working across 37 locations including 15 innovation hubs and driving $1.4 billion in industry and community partnered research.

The mission of the NUW Alliance is to seek out the big collaborations that make a difference, collaborations that unlock new value, impact and benefit for our communities across NSW.

The NUW Alliance pursues targeted impact of a scale and depth that cannot be achieved by a lone university in the interests of their collective communities across the Hunter, the Illawarra, Greater Sydney, NSW and the nation.  Achieving positive outcomes in the interests of community health, Indigenous Australians, women, sustainability and industry innovation.
The NUW Alliance is currently developing an innovative, human-centred Engineering program which would significantly build capacity in diverse cohorts and drive job growth, skills and innovation – training the engineers of the future.
