Our institution is committed to equity and a healthy and safe environment in all we do, and we will continue to ensure people know that sexual assault or sexual harassment is never acceptable.

The University of Newcastle follows a victim/survivor-led approach to sexual assault and sexual harassment, with our primary concern being the safety and support of those affected.

We encourage students affected by an experience of this nature to seek help from a range of campus-based support services that are tailored to individual needs. Our services are designed to help students access personalised support, advice and care. Our responding staff are equipped with the tools and specialised training to help people affected by sexual violence with care and compassion.

We also provide those who report assault or harassment with information and access to external support services (telephone-based and crisis centres) including support to report incidents to the NSW Police.

The University is mindful that sexually-based assault or harassment is a deeply personal experience and affects individuals differently, therefore we focus on supporting them in taking whatever course of action that is best for them. We recognise that some individuals may not choose to take a course of action for different personal reasons.

Our overall approach centres on educating, protecting against and preventing sexually based violence, as well as ensuring care and support is provided when reports are made.

Students can access more information about the approach we take on the University website.
