Returning to study marketing, Rebecca meant business

Monday, 15 July 2024

Rebecca Cramp started university straight out of high school but decided, at the time, it wasn’t for her. Seven years later she returned with a renewed sense of purpose.

Graduating with a Bachelor of Business with a double major in Marketing and Leadership and Management, Rebecca is proof that everyone’s timeline can be different.

Originally beginning a Bachelor of Business at age 18, Rebecca wasn’t sure where she wanted it to take her, so she left university to join the workforce. Over seven years she worked her way around the corporate side of NSW Health from customer service, contracts, and negotiations, to managing the warehouse.

After missing out on a promotion and the start of COVID, Rebecca decided to return to university to pursue a career in marketing.

“I ended up quitting my job and going back to university full-time and absolutely loved it,” she said.

“Returning to university when I was older has been a better experience for me. Knowing that I have a purpose made it easier to study.”

Rebecca’s return to university came full circle when the University’s Business and Commerce Association remembered her from when she was its Vice President at age 18 and asked her to rejoin. Serving as president for the past two years, Rebecca helped the association to run professional and social events.

“I created a new business plan for the association that focused on a clear direction and increasing engagement because COVID made everyone disappear,” Rebecca said.

“We started doing things that were not only social, but also helped members develop their workplace skills.”

It was this experience that led Rebecca to undertake a double major.

“I’ve enjoyed teaching people and learning from other people, as well as studying. That’s what led me into leadership as well as marketing.

Taking full advantage of everything the university offers, Rebecca went on the summer exchange program to London and recommends the experience to anybody who can take the opportunity.

Passionate about sports, Rebecca has her sights set on a career in high level sports marketing. In 2017, Rebecca played for the highest level of women’s rugby league in NSW before sustaining an injury.

Now playing a range of sports socially and having completed a university placement with the Newcastle Knights, Rebecca knows sports marketing is where she wants to take her career.

“I think if you are passionate about your industry, it shows in your work.”

Coming back to university helped Rebecca realise where she wanted to go in life, and she encourages anyone to take the leap, regardless of their age.

“Don’t be afraid to come back. It’s so rewarding. And if you take the time to study and really learn, I know it’s cliché to say, but the world’s your oyster.”
