Thousands connect with science during National Science Week

Thousands of students, families and community members engaged with University of Newcastle researchers, educators and outreach teams during a vibrant National Science Week program that brought science, engineering and innovation to life across Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney.

From exploring the future of space discovery and environmental sustainability to building catapults and meeting humanoid robots, the program showcased the University's commitment to connecting research with communities and inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.

Bringing research to communities

A series of events highlighted how University research is helping address real-world challenges across the region.

One attendee reflected on the value of the event, saying:

“I think it is important that people appreciate the value of research and its connection to our daily lives. These events are greatly helping to achieve that.”

Five panalists sitting on stools on stage in front of audienceThe College of Engineering, Science and Environment also partnered with HunterWiSE to present STEM Messages Matter, a panel discussion exploring how complex scientific issues can be communicated effectively and how trust and understanding can be built around topics shaping society and the future.

Earlier in the month, more than 300 students from 11 Central Coast high schools took part in H2Kn0w, a partnership with Central Coast Council that explored waterway health, stormwater pollution and environmental monitoring through hands-on activities and demonstrations.

Inspiring future scientists and engineers

National Science Week provided students of all ages with opportunities to experience science and engineering beyond the classroom.

Nine women in STEM standing in front of projector STEM Sparks introduced young girls and their families to careers in the built environment through practical challenges and conversations with industry professionals, helping broaden awareness of career opportunities in construction and infrastructure.

The University's SMART Program engaged more than 1,800 students through school visits, coding and robotics workshops, community events and interactive displays, encouraging young people to explore science and technology through creativity and problem-solving.

More than 200 Children's University participants also explored this year's National Science Week theme, Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All. Students investigated seed diversity, plant science and biodiversity while learning about the role seeds play in healthy ecosystems and communities.

A highlight of the week was the Looking Ahead Lecture featuring renowned astrophysicist and science communicator Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith, who inspired audiences to consider the discoveries and technologies that could shape the future.

One participant praised the event for making complex scientific ideas accessible and engaging.

Meanwhile, the National Science and Engineering Challenge team reached around 1,500 students at the Sydney Science Trail through an interactive catapult-building activity that encouraged teamwork, design thinking and problem-solving.

Visitors to the Newcastle Museum’s Hunter Science Festival were also treated to demonstrations SMART and from the University's NUbots team, whose humanoid soccer-playing robots proved a popular attraction for families and aspiring young engineers.

Across Newcastle, the Central Coast and Sydney, National Science Week demonstrated the power of research, education and community engagement to spark curiosity and create meaningful connections. Whether through public lectures, research showcases or hands-on STEM activities, the program highlighted how the University of Newcastle is helping make science accessible, relevant and inspiring for people of all ages.
