NEW Thinking at Newcastle Writers Festival
More than 30 University of Newcastle staff and students will share their creativity and insights at the 2018 Newcastle Writers Festival through a series of workshops, presentations and masterclasses.
Hosted for the first time at the University of Newcastle’s city campus, NeW Space, will be a Masterclass which delves into connecting family and local histories with current issues and audiences. The ‘Making family and local histories global’ Masterclass will be held on Friday 6 April with the University of Newcastle’s Associate Professor Nancy Cushing and researcher Dr Julie McIntyre, along with Professor Andrew May (University of Melbourne) and Sue Ryan.
The University of Newcastle will also host a NEW Thinking Series which will explore new ways of thinking, involving some controversial topics. University of Newcastle’s Professor Lyndall Ryan will discuss her ground-breaking research of the colonial frontier massacres map with Professor Catharine Coleborne in a session on ‘Mapping Aboriginal Massacres’.
Head of Humanities and Social Science and Dean of Arts at the University of Newcastle, Professor Coleborne said, “Professor Ryan’s work was an incredible way to visualise frontier maps in general and there has been an overwhelming global engagement with it.
“We’re looking forward to inviting conversation around the topicality of the map and the map itself. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions.”
University of Newcastle higher degree research students are also involved in presenting NEW Thinking Series sessions.
“By engaging University of Newcastle students as leaders in the Newcastle Writers Festival they have the opportunity to gain immersive work experience,” Professor Coleborne said.
In its sixth year, the Newcastle Writers Festival will host 140 writers and thinkers from throughout Australia from 6-8 April in the Civic precinct with the support of University of Newcastle’s Faculty of Education & Arts, and the Centre for 21st Century Humanities. The University is a founding sponsor of the Festival.
