2025 King’s Birthday Honours celebrates distinguished Australians
The University of Newcastle proudly acknowledges the outstanding Australians recognised in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours, particularly those that make up the diverse and accomplished University community.

University of Newcastle Vice Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky AO expressed pride in celebrating the achievements of University staff, alumni and supporters who have been named in this prestigious Honours List.
“As our University celebrates its 60 year anniversary, we are privileged to count these remarkable recipients among our incredible University community. These honours reflect the extraordinary contributions of individuals committed to excellence, innovation and service,” Professor Zelinsky said.
“Their work has had a profound impact, not only within their respective fields, but across society, enriching lives and shaping our future.”
The University of Newcastle extends its heartfelt congratulations to all honourees for their outstanding achievements and the legacy they are building for generations to come.
The University-affiliated recipients include:
Officer of the Order of Australia
Air Vice-Marshal Barbara Ann Courtney AO for distinguished service to the Australian Defence Force in senior command and staff roles.
Member of the Order of Australia
Professor Michael John Abramson AM for significant service to medicine as a respiratory physician, and as a researcher.
Dr John Patrick Drinan AM for significant service to the dairy and agriculture industries, to the environment, and to the community.
Ms Catherine Louise Johnson AM for significant service to oncology nursing and research.
Emeritus Professor Philip Newall AM for significant service to audiology education and research, and to the community.
Medal of the Order of Australia
Ms Carol Ann Duncan OAM for service to the community of Newcastle.
Mr Jeremy Heathcote OAM for service to Indigenous community health.
Major Dianne Lynne Hutchinson OAM for meritorious performance of duty as the Nursing Officer and Mentor to the Australian Defence Force Arts for Recovery, Resilience, Teamwork and Skills Program.
Mrs Louise Lambeth OAM for service to surf lifesaving.
Public Service Medal
Mr David Robert Turvey PSM for outstanding public service in establishing the National Skills Commission and subsequently the formation of Jobs and Skills Australia.
Conspicuous Service Cross
Major David Dennis Rees CSC for outstanding achievement in training system capability development as Senior Instructor and Officer Commanding MRH90 and Utility Wing, School of Army Aviation.
Emergency Services Medal
Miss Shaleigh Melinda Lennox ESM for distinguished service as a member of an Australian emergency service.
