Statement from the Vice-Chancellor on India and COVID-19

The University of Newcastle has strong ties with India through our students, our innovative research projects, our valued industry partners, and our staff, their families, and friends. We also have a strong and vibrant Indian community here in Newcastle and in the communities that include our campuses.

I would like to express our sympathies to those members of our University community who are affected by the crisis in and South Asia, and sadly in a number of other countries from where we are privileged to receive students.

Whilst Australia has weathered the COVID-19 pandemic reasonably well, we have all experienced significant changes to the way we live our lives. We are continuing to experience change and uncertainty as we emerge from COVID-19 here at the University and have challenges to face together still.

Our University continues to operate a COVID-19 testing facility at our Callaghan campus and we are now operating a vaccination clinic at the University Health Service at Callaghan.

I also remind our students that during these times of change and crisis it is important to connect with each other and seek support if it is getting difficult to manage on your own. I would like to encourage students affected by the COVID-19 situation to also seek support informally through our community, or formally through our many support services available at the University.

Students who are located in Australia can access support through our University Counselling Service, where in-person, telephone, drop-in, and online chat sessions are available without cost. Support is also available for our students who are in India and abroad through AskUON.
