Scholarship helps the on-going development of community programs within the School of Creative Industries.
As a recipient of the 2018 International Development Scholarship for UON professional staff, School of Creative Industries Administrative Assistant, Alisha-Jane Laney recently spent two weeks in the UK to build international relationships and gain valuable insight into the events and summer programs the University of West England and the Royal Conservatoire of Glasgow do well.

Alisha-Jane constantly pursues ways to maximise the opportunities for students once they complete their degrees as well as the needs of the community stakeholder groups and be able to provide a superlative point of contact and interface with the University.
“The UWE Degree Show celebrates new talent, with students taking the opportunity to share their work with friends, family, the general public and potential employers, providing inspiration for all who attend. The degree show is the first insight, for others, into student’s expression of how they believe their creative practice can effect and influence the world.
“It is an ideal set up, providing the invaluable one on one time to speak with industry professionals eventuating with the possibility of future employment,” Alisha-Jane said.
A key takeaway of Alisha-Jane’s scholarship was the knowledge she has gained into the student’s experience - what worked best for them, their results and future opportunities and seeing what she can implement back at the School of Creative Industries.
“In 2019, School of Creative Industries will be holding “Festival X” in similar alliance with the UWE degree show with opportunities to showcase the schools degrees to the wider community and for the students to have industry engagement as part of their end of year exams,” she said.
Visiting similar Universities has made it easy for Alisha-Jane to use their successes as a benchmark when implementing the knowledge at UON.
“When I visited the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow I learnt about their successful school holidays programs and how they facilitate them. Running courses no more than 3 days proved to be the most effective with either a performance or a certificate at the end. This encouraged the students to attend each year and look into their yearly programs,” she said.
“I loved having the opportunity to see this firsthand and understand how I can facilitate this back within our school,” Alisha-Jane said.
Alisha-Jane highly recommends UON professional staff to apply for the 2019 International Development Scholarship.
“The scholarship has given me the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with other professionals in my industry and this has had both a personal and professional impact on my outlook on the future of School of Creative Industries. Anyone with career ambitions and wanting to make an impact at UON should apply for the scholarship,”
“Having support from my school was extremely encouraging. This opportunity has developed my career and my positive outlook on the future for the School of Creative Industries,” she said.
