Ballot outcome at University of Newcastle
The University of Newcastle has today announced the outcome of the ballot on its proposed new enterprise agreements.
The University put the agreements to a staff ballot after negotiations with unions had stalled after more than 15 months of discussions.
“We felt it was important to give staff an opportunity to vote on our proposed agreements after 15 months of negotiations,” Professor Zelinsky said.
“We’ve heard clearly that the package of benefits we are offering in the new agreements isn’t right yet.”
Agreement | Eligible Voters | Voter Turnout | Yes Votes | No Votes |
Academic staff and Teachers agreement | 1676 | 1085 | 114 | 971 |
Professional staff agreement | 2725 | 1720 | 425 | 1295 |
The proposed agreements included a 9.5% salary increase over three years, six additional days of paid leave per year, and more flexibility in the use of other leave. It also included a proposed increase of superannuation for casual staff from 10% to 17%.
“We will take some time to reflect on the feedback we have received from staff directly over the past week about what is most important to them.”
“We will engage further with our staff early next year as we consider the next steps.”
The existing Enterprise Agreements will remain in place in the interim and there will be no change to salaries or conditions at this time.
