The Hon. TF Bathurst, appointed Chief Justice of NSW on 1 June 2011, presented a lecture at the Newcastle Law School titled "The Trials and Tribulations of Being a Lawyer".

The career of Chief Justice Bathurst is extensive, beginning with his admission as a barrister in 1977 where he specialised corporate law and litigation. In 1987 he was appointed Queen's Counsel. His considerable experience in corporate law saw his appointment as a member of the Australian Government's Takeovers Panel (2006-2011).
Prior to his appointment to the bench, the Chief Justice served as President of both the Australian Bar Association (2008-2010) and the New South Wales Bar Association (2009-2011), the Executive Committee of which he has been a member since 2002.
