2014 Charlie Perkins Scholarship Winner
UON graduate wins 2014 Charlie Perkins Scholarship awarded annually to 3 outstanding Indigenous Australian scholars.
Jessica Buck, a graduate of Biomedical Science (with Distinction) and Diploma of Languages (Japanese) at the University of Newcastle, is one of the three Indigenous Australians awarded the 2014 Charlie Perkins Scholarship.
A resident of Newcastle, Jessica is a Kamilaroi descendant, an Indigenous Australian Koori people native to New South Wales. Jessica has a history of impressive scholarly achievements and the Charlie Perkins Scholarship provides her with the opportunity to undertake a Masters of Science in Neuroscience at Oxford University.
The prestigious award is granted to Indigenous Australians who have the potential to become leaders both in their fields and in their communities. The recipients will be funded by the government through a three-year, $2.2 million grant to the Aurora Project. The Funding allows Aurora to continue the Indigenous Scholars International Study Tour and the Aspiration Initiative's Academic Enrichment Program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
