Researchers awarded over half a million dollars to establish a Centre for Construction Safety and Well-being
Through an industry partnership, a Construction Management research team of the University of Newcastle was successful in winning a grant of $620,000 to establish a Centre for Construction Safety and Well-being (CCSW) at the School of Architecture and Built Environment.
The project team members are Dr Tanvi Newaz, Dr Marcus Jefferies, Dr Maggie Tang, Associate Professor Thayaparan Gajendran, Dr Sittimont Kanjanabootra and Dr Buddhini Ginigaddara Appuhamilage. The industry partner is Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd.
Chief Investigator Dr Tanvi Newaz expects the Centre will contribute towards the academic knowledge base for the benefit of the whole construction industry. The aim is to provide lessons for construction industry health and safety management in the short and medium term but to also identify ways to enhance health and safety knowledge and skill development for future generations of construction management graduates. The research team would like to thank construction company Hansen Yuncken for partnering with them on this significant project and look forward to working together on it. This partnership is one of the outcomes of the successful Enforceable Undertaking between Hansen Yuncken (HY) and SafeWork NSW.
Some of the initial projects that the centre will be engaged in with HY and associated organizations will be:
- Development of a Worker Insights Training Simulation.
- Development of a Technology Enabled Worker Insight Application.
- Development of animated learning videos for high-risk construction works.
- Two specific PhD student projects investigating construction industry site management and health and safety leadership and assurance; and
- Best practice approaches to supporting families following workplace incidents.
