A cohort of Papua New Guinean health professionals has joined the university to undertake a Graduate Certificate in Nutrition.
The university has welcomed a cohort of Papua New Guinean health professionals from each of the 22 provinces of their 4 regions to undertake a Graduate Certificate in Nutrition program. Led by Professor Lesley MacDonald-Wicks and her team in the School of Health Sciences, the program aims to support Papua New Guinea in achieving its development goals through education and capacity building along with creating enduring relationships with Australia.
Funded by a $1.2 million grant from the Australian Government via DFAT through Australia Awards Papua New Guinea, the program seeks to address the high burden of malnutrition by upskilling Papua New Guinean health professionals with nutrition knowledge and skills to bring back to their communities. The 12-week program will provide opportunities for participants to learn in Australia's nutrition environment, with 1 week of immersion in Indigenous Health in Tamworth with the Department of Rural Health.
The group was warmly welcomed at a formal ceremony by university representatives including Nathan Towney, Vice Chancellor Alex Zelinsky AO, Lord Mayor Dr Ross Kerridge, Chaplain John Kewa, Professor Lesley MacDonald-Wicks, a representative from the Papua New Guinea Health Department and Chancellor Patricia Forsythe.
