Department of Rural Health celebrates 25 years of impact in Tamworth
The University of Newcastle's Department of Rural Health celebrated its 25th anniversary in Tamworth last week, bringing together staff, community partners and students to recognise a quarter century of improving health outcomes across rural and regional NSW.
Over the past 25 years, students have spent almost 90,000 weeks on placement across the Department's footprint, more than 1,500 medical students have completed a full year of rural training, and staff have provided professional development and skills training for around 30,000 health practitioners.
Since its beginnings in 2001, when a small team operated from a room at Tamworth Hospital, the Department has grown into a major contributor to rural health education, research and workforce development.
Today, the Department supports more than 200 year-long students and more than 1,200 short-term placements each year across seven training locations throughout the North West, New England and Mid North Coast regions.
The anniversary celebration highlighted the lasting impact the Department has had on students and communities. Many graduates who trained in rural settings have gone on to build rewarding careers in regional Australia – a number of them are now teaching and mentoring the next generation of students as staff of the Department.
The event recognised the many staff members, clinical educators, supervisors, researchers, health service partners and community organisations whose dedication has helped shape the Department's success over the past 25 years.
As the Department looks to the future, it remains committed to strengthening the rural health workforce, advancing research and creating opportunities that improve health outcomes for communities across regional NSW.
Current students undertaking placements with the Department had a chance to chat to guests about their rural experience, the facilities and their plans for the future.
