Have a Hometown Holiday to support the Newcastle tourism industry
A new initiative aimed at boosting tourism in Newcastle will launch on Thursday.
The Hometown Holiday project incentivises Newcastle residents to experience the city as a tourist to provide an economic stimulus for local industry sectors hardest hit by the pandemic.
Through a social media campaign, community members will have the opportunity to win one of 100 $500 vouchers to spend at participating Hometown Holiday businesses, including local accommodation, attractions, tours, restaurants, bars and retail outlets.
Funded by the City of Newcastle City Taskforce Industry Response Program, the Hometown Holiday project builds on previous research by the Tourism Research Group in the University’s Newcastle Business School.
Led by Dr Tamara Young, the research revealed visiting friends and family are a key target market for Newcastle as a destination. When residents experience Newcastle as tourists, this can improve their tourism product knowledge and encourages them to be credible destination ambassadors to attract friends and family visitors to the city in the future.
The program will officially launch at an event on Thursday 12 November, 9.30am at Battlesticks (200 Wharf Road, Newcastle) with the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Nuatali Nelmes.
