Keeping our campuses safe and healthy is a responsibility we all share.
From mid- September, smoking is permitted at three locations at our Ourimbah campus and eight locations at our Callaghan campus, including three in the student residential precinct. These designated smoking areas, or ‘smoking pods’, will initially be in place for 12 months, during which time the University will continue to work toward a long-term solution for being smoke-free.
We are making changes to the University’s restrictions to smoking on campus to manage the broader risks associated with bushfire and cigarette butt litter that have emerged.
The health and safety of our campus environments and the people on them is a University priority. Since our smoke-free policy came into effect in July 2017, broader risks associated with bushfire and cigarette butt litter have emerged. After a particularly dry winter, the level of risk is intensified.
If you smoke on campus, please use the smoking pods. If you need help quitting please make use of the many resources available at http://www.icanquit.com.au.
If you see people smoking in locations other than the designated smoking pods, please direct them to the closest pod. A map of the locations is available at www.newcastle.edu.au/smokingpods.
