Construction begins on new student accommodation development at Callaghan Campus
The University of Newcastle has marked a major milestone in addressing student housing demand, turning the first sod on its new 450-bed student accommodation development at Callaghan Campus.
Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery MP joined representatives from the University and construction partner Hansen Yuncken to mark the commencement of construction.
The eight-storey development will provide purpose-built, affordable and modern accommodation from 2028, with a mix of single studios and shared living clusters.
Ms Hornery welcomed the start of construction and the benefits the project will bring to the local community.
"This is a significant project for our region and a welcome boost to student housing in Newcastle," said Ms Hornery.
"The University of Newcastle attracts students from across NSW, Australia and overseas, and it is essential that students have access to safe, affordable and high-quality accommodation close to where they study."
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, said the new accommodation would support more students to live on campus.
"We know students who live on campus are more likely to remain engaged with their studies and achieve strong academic outcomes," said Professor Zelinsky.
"This development will strengthen the student experience at the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus while helping to address accommodation pressures facing students.”
"Today's sod turn marks an exciting step forward in our commitment to providing students with affordable, high-quality accommodation.
Designed by Lyons Architecture, the timber-framed building will feature communal study and social spaces, bicycle parking, on campus electric vehicle charging facilities.
Once complete, the facility will add significantly to the University's accommodation offering and support growing demand from domestic, regional and international students.
The development is expected to welcome its first students in Semester 2, 2028.
