Anyone can use our Library spaces during opening hours. Joining the Library allows you to borrow items and access additional facilities and services. See below for available membership options and information on how to join.

Your student ID card and login details are all you need to use the Library. As a student, you have full access to all Library services, including:

Including academic staff, professional staff, conjoint staff, and visiting academic affiliates.

All staff members are automatically members of the University of Newcastle Library. Use your staff ID card and login details to access Library services, including:

  • Physical books and other items - unlimited loans for 12 weeks per item and up to 5 renewals. Up to 10 hold requests
  • Databases, e-books, and other digital resources
  • Course readings - 2 items for 24 hours
  • Equipment (except laptops)
  • Computers & Wi-Fi
  • Borrowing from other libraries
  • Support options, including 1-on-1 Book a Librarian sessions and Library Chat.

Graduates of the University of Newcastle are offered free library membership. Please complete the membership application form and attach evidence of your course completion from the University of Newcastle.

Once your application has been processed, you can collect your membership card from your nominated library during opening hours. Your membership will be valid for three years from the date you collect your card and is easily renewed by contacting our library staff.

Alumni can use the following Library services:

  • Physical books and other items — maximum of 50 items for 2 weeks per item and up to 5 renewals. Up to 10 hold requests
  • Access to library spaces during opening hours
  • Access to the University of Newcastle guest Wi-Fi network on personal devices
  • Electronic resources are available from a designated community walk-in terminal during Library opening hours. The list of available databases for community access is here. Access to resources will vary according to licensing agreements. The terminal provides limited access to email and printing services.

Please note that membership does not include:

  • Borrowing from other libraries
  • Laptops for loan, podcast rooms or other tech equipment
  • Access to 24-hour spaces after-hours or bookable spaces

The University of Newcastle Library offers local secondary school students the opportunity to get a head start on tertiary studies with access to our spaces and the option to join for free to borrow items.

Complete the membership application form and attach a signed parental consent form.

High School students can use the following Library services:

  • Physical books and other items - maximum of 50 items for 2 weeks per item and up to 5 renewals. Up to 10 hold requests
  • Access to study in library spaces during opening hours
  • Access to theUniversity of Newcastle guest Wi-Fi network on personal devices
  • Electronic resources are available from a designated community walk-in terminal during Library opening hours. The list of available databases for community access is here. Access to resources will vary according to licensing agreements. The terminal provides limited access to email and printing services.

University Libraries of Australia and New Zealand (ULANZ) is a reciprocal borrowing scheme enabling University of Newcastle students and staff to borrow in person from other participating university libraries.

How to use ULANZ as a student from another institution

To sign up to borrow from the University of Newcastle library as a student studying at a participating ULANZ institution, complete the membership application form and provide proof of current enrolment/employment at your home institution.

Memberships are free and are valid until 28 February of the following year. A new application must be lodged each year.

ULANZ members can use the following Library services:

How to use ULANZ as a University of Newcastle Student

As a University of Newcastle student, you can participate in the ULANZ reciprocal borrowing scheme with external institutions. Register directly at the participating ULANZ library from which you wish to borrow to sign up. Please note that you will be subject to the institution's loan rules and conditions, including fines and fees.
