Auchmuty Library has a new exhibition space, and we're kicking things off with Word Mark: Typographic Encounters with the Library Collection, an exploration of typography, design and the stories hidden in our collections.

Our Library holds examples of an estimated 2,000 to 5,000 distinct typefaces. Come on a journey with us, from the days of metal type cast in foundries through to contemporary digital typography. Drawing on our rare books, archives and special collections, the exhibition brings this history together with the contemporary work of artist and typographer Sophie Elinor.

A typographer, graphic designer and animator, Sophie has worked on projects for Adobe, Bluey, Patreon and The Simpsons. With a playful approach to letterforms and a love of blending analogue and digital techniques, Sophie brings words to life in unexpected ways.

Discover how typography connects the past and present, and how something we encounter every day can become an extraordinary form of visual expression.

Join us on Tuesday 3 November at 12.30pm for an artist talk with University of Newcastle alumna Sophie Elinor to celebrate the launch of Word Mark: Typographic Encounters with the Library Collection.
