Graduates of this program will be able to seek employment as Secondary teachers in their home countries (Graduates should check their local accreditation requirements to determine the suitability of this program), and aims to develop graduates who are inspirational teachers with the capability to act professionally, ethically and effectively in their Secondary school destinations; insightful scholars with the capability to engage in rational enquiry into curriculum, policy and practice; and innovative leaders with the capability to play a constructive role in public discourse on and beyond education.
This program offers inherent flexibility of choice and pathways to specialities in more than one field, significantly improving employment prospects. Areas of studies include Aboriginal Studies, Ancient History, Business Studies, Computing Information Systems and Software Design, Design and Technology, Economics, English, Food Technology, Geography, Health and Physical Education, Industrial Technology Engineering, Industrial Technology Graphics and Multimedia, Industrial Technology Timber and Metal, Information Processes and Technology, Languages, Legal Studies, Maths, Modern History, Science, Society and Culture, Software Design and Development, Special Education, Studies of Religion and TESOL.
The availability of courses within the below listed teaching areas are subject to change. Online delivery is also available for some courses, and some courses are delivered from the Newcastle City Precinct.
Career opportunities include high school teacher (in subject specific areas), special education, English as a second language teacher, health and fitness trainer, community educator, educational researcher, education publication writer or editor, education policy analyst, education consultant, curriculum developer, educational materials developer, curriculum evaluator, and educational administrator.

Admission information
Admission requirements
Admission to this program is available to international students only and requires the successful completion of a senior secondary school qualification similar to the Higher School Certificate (HSC), the highest educational award in New South Wales schools.
All Applicants must have an English Language proficiency equivalent to an IELTS Overall Score of 6.5, with a Section Minimum in all areas of 6.5.
Admission to this program is restricted to applicants from countries where there is no reciprocal accreditation with NESA. It is the applicant’s responsibility to determine if this degree will be accepted as a teaching qualification in their own state, country or territory or the country in which they intend to teach.
Minimum English language proficiency requirements

Credit transfer

Compulsory program requirements
This degree requires students to participate in two placements:
- Completion of 20 days teacher observations in a 7-12 setting in a NSW Department of Education or other NSW school or service providers; and
- Completion of 50 days of supervised practice in a Secondary school setting in their own state, country or territory or the country in which they intend to teach.
Placements may extend beyond normal semester times and students must meet their own associated travel and accommodation costs, where applicable.
During placement, students will be subject to the policies and procedures of the placement facility.
Students must meet all the Education Placement Requirements, including a NSW Working with Children clearance.

Program requirements
The Bachelor of Education (Secondary Studies) program requires the successful completion of 330 units.
Students must only complete courses that form part of the program and must not complete more than 330 units.
Students are required to successfully complete:
- 150 units of Core Courses and
- ONE First Teaching Area and a choice of one of the following
- additional teaching area(s) or
- electives or
- extended studies.
Students must refer to the information in the Bachelor of Education (Secondary Studies) Teaching Area Requirements, in conjunction with the relevant First Teaching Area program plan and the program structure.
Core and compulsory courses are sequenced to provide foundational knowledge as students move through each year of study. This sequence is detailed in the relevant program plan.
Students must successfully complete the previous course or courses in sequence.
Students are also required to meet additional academic and non-academic admission requirements in the first year of the program to ensure progression into second year education courses.
Students will be required to undertake the final internship course, EDUC4303 International Internship: Secondary, in their own state, country or territory or the country in which they intend to teach.
