The Academic English Screening Test (AEST) tests English language skills related to academic success. It is a short test taken by students in selected courses to ascertain whether they are likely to need academic English support during their time at the University of Newcastle.

  • The test is designed to measure the academic English skills of a wide range of students, including native speakers of English.
  • The test is taken online and takes 30 minutes in total. Information about the test dates will be in The Know during Welcome Week.
  • Take the test as early as you can to make sure you get your feedback.
  • All students will receive a report detailing whether they would benefit from the follow up sessions delivered by Academic Learning Support.

The Academic Excellence Workshops in Weeks 3 and 4 of semester are intended to develop the skills evaluated via the Academic English Screening Test. In Week 3, the workshops will cover Efficient Reading and Notetaking, while the Week 4 workshops will focus on Effective Writing.

Workshops will be held Monday to Friday on campus and online.  Students at each campus (including online) will go in the draw to win a $50 GiftPay card each week (five cards to be won each week).

Frequently asked questions

All commencing undergraduate students are eligible to take the test. If you are in an Enabling program or a post graduate student you may be invited to take the test. Keep an eye out for more information by email.

The test does not save so make sure you can finish it in one sitting. It will take about 30 minutes plus about 10 minutes to carefully read the instructions.

You'll have the option to attend and you'll probably become even more confident in using academic English!
