The University of Newcastle Employability Excellence Awards showcase the students, staff and partner organisations that support our reputation for producing life-ready graduates.
These achievers have been selected from an outstanding field of 90 nominations, and their stories highlight exceptional achievements in Work Integrated Learning, extracurricular activity, entrepreneurship and paid internships.

Student Employability Achievement Award
We’re proud to announce Mikyla Peters as the recipient of the 2021 Student Employability Achievement Award.
Student Intern / Cadet of the Year
Combined Business and Commerce student Ryan Maginnity has been named the Student Intern/Cadet of the Year for 2021.
Student Entrepreneur of the Year
Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Laws (Honours) student Ashley Harrison is being recognised as the University of Newcastle Student Entrepreneur of the Year.
Work Integrated Learning Student of the Year
Michelle Wellard
Michelle Wellard has been awarded the Work Integrated Learning Student of the Year in recognition of her efforts during a hospital placement as part of her Bachelor of Midwifery.
Krystal Goodman, Kaitlyn Cooper and Sammii Downs
Krystal Goodman, Kaitlyn Cooper and Sammii Downs have collectively achieved themselves the Work Integrated Learning Student of the Year for 2021.
Nicholas Harris
Nicholas Harris has been awarded the Work Integrated Learning Student of the Year for his development of an emotional regulation and social skills program for Year 1 and 2 primary school students.

Central Coast Health District (CCLHD) Pharmacy Services is being inducted into the Work Integrated Learning Hall of Fame in recognition of their tremendous efforts in the training and development of pharmacy students.

This year, social and environmental consultancy Umwelt Australia are being recognised for their efforts in providing University of Newcastle students with practical work opportunities.

Work Integrated Learning Staff Member of the Year
Professor Philip Morgan
This year, Professor Philip Morgan has been awarded the Work Integrated Learning Staff Member of the Year for his Daughters and Dads Active and Empowered program.
Dr Chris Tucker
For the last five years, Dr Chris Tucker has run a unique employability experience in collaboration with Tangentyere Council - an Indigenous organisation in Alice Springs that represents 17 Town Camps.
Dr Tanmay Bagade
Dr Tanmay Bagade has been awarded the University of Newcastle’s Work Integrated Learning Staff Member of the Year for his development of the unique Global Health Pathway course.
